On a visit to a UN refugee camp in 2016, she was thrilled to read it to children and gift them copies.<\/p>\n<p>Ivanova grew up devouring books, the second of five sisters in a Christian family. Reading the novel<em> Little Women<\/em> in high school inspired her to pen fiction based on real life. When the French women\u2019s magazine <em>Amina<\/em> published several of her short stories at age 20, God confirmed a calling to write.<\/p>\n<p>Ivanova has also written for Francophone youth in the magazine, <em>Jouv\u2019 Afrique,<\/em> and the comics collection, <em>Eclats Bandes <\/em><em>Dessin\u00e9es<\/em><em> d\u2019Afrique<\/em>. Today she is coordinating creation of the African-authored-and-illustrated \u201cGraphic Novel Bible,\u201d a project by Comix35, Editions Cl\u00e9, and Publications pour la Jeunesse Africaine.<\/p>\n<p>Many Christians in Francophone Africa view fiction as \u201cfake\u201d and reading it a waste of time, Ivanova says.\u00a0 Similarly, some view writing for children as second-class: \u201cMaybe someday you\u2019ll be able to write for adults,\u201d a pastor once told Ivanova, meaning to encourage her.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8807\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8807 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lawrence-Ivanova-posed-book-LittAfrica2019_Day2_Nov5-1499114-cropped-lowres-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lawrence-Ivanova-posed-book-LittAfrica2019_Day2_Nov5-1499114-cropped-lowres-300x290.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lawrence-Ivanova-posed-book-LittAfrica2019_Day2_Nov5-1499114-cropped-lowres-193x187.jpg 193w, https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Lawrence-Ivanova-posed-book-LittAfrica2019_Day2_Nov5-1499114-cropped-lowres.jpg 559w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ivanova&#8217;s new book, &#8220;Imani: The Little Doctor,&#8221; will be published by Step Publishers. But Ivanova\u2019s vision to serve children is unwavering. She credits gratitude to God and prayer as effective antidotes. \u201cMy ministry is to share how God has comforted me,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Other African wordsmiths are gaining from Ivanova\u2019s talents. Writers from various nations learned how to create graphic novels in her workshop at our <a href=\"https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/ar\/littafrica-2019-bringing-words-to-life\/\">LittAfrica<\/a> conference in Ghana last year. And church leaders in Cameroon acquired writing tools in MAI\u2019s workshop that Ivanova helped coordinate this March.<\/p>\n<p>Her latest children\u2019s manuscript, \u201cImani: The Little Doctor,\u201d will be published in English by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stepbooksghana.org\/\">Step Publishers<\/a> in Ghana.
