This poem by Christina Jones won first place in our LittWorld 2018 writing contest<\/a>. Judges commented, \u201cThis piece has a strong spiritual, emotional and intellectual impact, and is very creative and well-structured. It deals with a deep emotional problem that many readers can identify with. A fresh view on God\u2019s life-changing, resurrection power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Participants were invited to submit an original piece of writing that helps readers see the truth or power of one Scripture verse or passage in a fresh way. We received more than 152 submissions from 91 writers in at least 22 countries.<\/p>\n

Garden Tomb Roses
\n<\/strong>by Christina Jones<\/p>\n

My mother is
\nroses she wallpapered on our living room walls
\nand planted, 50 bushes strong, in our yard.<\/p>\n

With her petal-pink lips and leaf-yellow hair,
\npulled out in an 80s wingspan behind her ears,
\nI am nine, and she is the most beautiful thing in the world.<\/p>\n

But, \u201cI\u2019m not,\u201d she says into the bathroom mirror we share,
\nand these thorns of hers draw beads of our blood
\nfrom my fingertips hissing, \u201cyou are not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her fingernails are blunt and torn from
\nliving room walls where she
\nsmoothed the wallpaper
\nand the rocky ground where she
\nplanted the bushes.<\/p>\n

I am nineteen and I believe her.<\/p>\n

My mother is
\ntaking down the wallpaper now because
\nit is out of style and
\nshe is tearing up the rose bushes because
\nthey are too hard to care for.<\/p>\n

Her fingers crack and bleed with
\n\u201cI\u2019mnotyou\u2019renotwe\u2019renot,\u201d
\nand I run away.<\/p>\n

I am 29 and I come home to
\nevergreen trees in the yard and
\npale paint on the living room walls.<\/p>\n

My mother is
\na little girl with soft hair and pale lips
\nin front of the bathroom mirror.<\/p>\n

She looks at me.
\nIn our reflection her eyes are moss-colored,
\nlike the roots of her rose bushes torn up.<\/p>\n

She lets me hold her small hands and,
\nHer heart is in ten pieces stuck in them.<\/p>\n

Together,
\nwe peel down and uproot
\nher drunken father\u2019s face,
\nhis hidden, vile mouth that broke her,
\nfrom the face of the God she gave me.<\/p>\n

Unveiled,
\nHe is
\nthe gardener outside the tomb.
\nAnd He says to her
\nwilting leaves and bruised petals,
\nwith a voice that is rain falling and third-day sun shining,
\n\u201cI am,\u201d and, \u201cyou are.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is the most beautiful thing in the world
\nAnd I believe him.<\/p>\n
