We want to thank everyone who participated in the five writing contests. Through the contests, we met gifted and aspiring writers from many countries with whom we will stay in touch. We look forward to holding more writing contests in the future, including one which will begin in the months leading up to LittWorld 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You can find all of the winning entries in the list on the left.<\/p>\n

Of all of the thoughtful, creative, and well-written submissions, we are excited to announce that Ivanova Nono Fotso of Cameroon has been selected as the grand-prize winner for the English submissions for her poem, \u201cMy Heart is a Battlefield.” You can read the full news release here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Below is Ivanova’s poem.<\/p>\n

My Heart Is a Battlefield<\/strong><\/p>\n

By Ivanova Nono Fotso\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Cameroon: 25 million inhabitants, 280 tribes, over 250 native languages.<\/p>\n

What you hear is the power of numbers
\nAnd the musicality of our languages.
\nWhat is muted are the taunts at dialects,
\nLike mine that sounds funny.
\nMy accent and surname are Shibboleths
\nThat can deprive me of my rights.<\/p>\n

What you see is the uniformity of one race
\nRight from the cradle where they are all so cute.
\nWhat is hidden from your eyes are the shades of black,
\nWhich the ears of newborns already betray,
\nAnd that measure our beauty,
\nFrom the ugliest to the fairest.<\/p>\n

What you cheer is the diversity of our national team
\nAnd the freedom of speech of our political parties.
\nWhat is at stake behind the scenes
\nIs my safety in the neighborhood,
\nWhen the flat-footed player is my namesake
\nAnd the failed candidate, my fellow tribesman.<\/p>\n

No, my country is not at war;
\nThe real battle is fought in my heart:
\nLove against hatred, love against fear.
\nFear blows: \u201cFlee away! This place is not safe.\u201d
\nHatred strikes: \u201cHate them back! Stab them with your words. \u201c<\/p>\n

O Lord! Come and help me!
\nI don\u2019t want to hate my brother,
\nI don\u2019t want to fear my neighbor,
\nI don\u2019t want to despise myself,
\nBut I no longer have the strength to love.<\/p>\n

I come to learn from you.
\nI want to reflect your love.
\nYou knew the feelings expressed, and the resentments hidden.
\nYou saw the times when hate won, and actions taken.
\nYet you loved us with a love \u202fthat led you to the cross.<\/p>\n

Love is not blind;
\nIt sees offenses, and offers forgiveness.
\nLove is not weak;
\nIt swims against the tide of impulsive reactions,
\nTo bring healing to the broken heart.<\/p>\n

If I can help my neighbor,
\nWithout asking which tribe he is from;
\nIf I can rejoice and mourn with my compatriot,
\nNot dwelling on the harm we have done to ourselves,
\nIf I can lift up for my fellow men a sincere prayer of blessing
\nAnd not that of retribution,
\nThen good will have overcome evil.
\nLove will have won the battle.
\nAt least in my heart.<\/p>\n

Ivanova Nono Fotso<\/strong>\u00a0is a children\u2019s author and scriptwriter. Her work has been published by <\/em>PJA \u2013 Publications pour la Jeunesse Africaine<\/em>, in the form of comics and illustrated books. She has led workshops on scriptwriting at conferences including MAI-Africa\u2019s LittAfrica 2019 conference in Ghana. She lives in Yaound\u00e9, Cameroon.\u202f<\/em><\/p>\n

Writing prompts for each contest deadline:<\/strong><\/p>\n

July 31: Write a short parable with the theme of hope.<\/p>\n

August 31: What Scripture passage has gained special meaning for you during the global pandemic, and why.<\/p>\n

September 30: Write a psalm or poem that expresses to God your pain over injustice, racism, violence, poverty or some other challenge in your country and your cry for His intervention.<\/p>\n

October 31: Whom in the Bible (other than Jesus) would you like to meet for dinner, and what would you talk about? You may choose to create a script if you like.<\/p>\n

November 30: “When I see how Christians act, I don\u2019t want to become one,” someone says.\u00a0 Write a letter in response.<\/p>\n
