This reflection by Mason Brown of the U.S. placed first in our August writing contest.\u00a0Contest participants were invited to respond to this prompt\u00a0in 400 words or less: “What Scripture passage has gained special meaning for you during the global pandemic?”<\/strong> \u00a0Thirty-six\u00a0writers from 18\u00a0nations in the English contest submitted entries.<\/p>\n

Contest judge Dr. Miriam Adeney, an anthropologist,\u00a0author and\u00a0professor of global Christianity,\u00a0described\u00a0Mason’s award-winning submission, \u201cPity Party\u201d on Exodus 3:14-15,\u00a0as\u00a0“personal and\u00a0self-disclosing\u2014inviting\u00a0the reader to identify and to feel…while adding new biblical\/theological information in the Hebrew terminology.” Adeney also noted,\u00a0“The addition of simple poetry form adds to the stylistic richness.”<\/p>\n

Pity Party
\n<\/strong>By Mason Brown<\/p>\n

I am frightened.<\/em><\/p>\n

I am vulnerable.<\/em><\/p>\n

I am medically fragile.<\/em><\/p>\n

I am a septuagenarian.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I am alone.<\/em><\/p>\n

My Bible study early in the midst of the shelter-in-place order brought me out of this pity-party.<\/p>\n

Toward the end of March, I was reading the account of God calling Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cGod said to Moses, \u2018I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: \u2018I AM has sent me to you.\u2019<\/li>\n
  2. God also said to Moses, \u2018Say to the Israelites, \u2018The Lord the God of your fathers\u2014the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob\u2014has sent me to you.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This is my name forever,<\/p>\n

    The name you shall call me<\/p>\n

    from generation to generation.\u201d Exodus 3:14-15 NIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    One of the benefits of this pandemic, at least for me, was having extra time to dig deeper into the context of the scriptures. When I looked at the Hebrew translation of Exodus 3:14-15, \u201cEhyeh asher ehyeh<\/em>,\u201d (I AM WHO I AM) used a form of the verb hayah<\/em>, to be. The Hebrew translation was more accurately I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE.<\/p>\n

    Now I understand the Bible translators could not translate every Bible passage into every possible grammatical tense. They had to choose just one. I would not fault them. But as I contemplated this Hebrew translation, I became more aware of God\u2019s omnipotence.<\/p>\n

    It seemed to me God was saying to the Israelites, I will be whoever you need me to be: The God who hardens Pharaoh\u2019s heart in Egypt, parts the Red Sea, provides manna in the desert, brings forth water from a rock, disciplines you when you forget my commandments, goes before you in battle, keeps your sandals from wearing thin\u2026from generation to generation.<\/p>\n

    \"\"I reread the scripture inserting the words, I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE. I knew God would be whoever I needed him to be throughout this pandemic. His promises are as true in my generation as they were in the days of Moses.<\/p>\n

    I am unafraid<\/em>.
