My heart is broken over the callousness that killed George Floyd<\/a>\u00a0on May 25, and even more so because it is rooted in decades and centuries of valuing the lives of white people more than the lives of black people. This injustice and oppression run deep in U.S. culture; you can trace it back to before the Constitution counted Black slaves as 3\/5ths of a person. It was accepted as part of everyday life under Jim Crow laws, and it\u2019s enforced today with an engorged prison system in which 56% of incarcerated people are African American or Hispanic.\u00a0In Illinois, where I live, 56%<\/a> of the prison population is Black, though they are 15% of the state population.<\/div>\n

\nWhat are we to do now, when injustice is so deeply entrenched?<\/b><\/b><\/div>\n

For one thing, let\u2019s hold on to the conviction that it doesn\u2019t have to be this way. Other countries like Germany and South Africa give models for what it means to collectively face up to a horrifying legacy and move forward toward change.<\/p>\n

But, really, we won\u2019t be able to move forward until we come to terms with the darkness in our history.<\/p>\n

Change means learning\u2014and repentance. For those of us who don\u2019t have to live this injustice every day, it may take a while to understand. Let\u2019s make the effort. (For starters, let me recommend this article<\/a>, which I found very helpful in putting the protests into context. It\u2019s written by Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy<\/i><\/a>, one of the best books I\u2019ve ever read).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And, yes, repentance. Bryan Stevenson writes in Just Mercy,<\/i>\u00a0\u201cWe have a choice. We can embrace our humanness, which means embracing our broken natures and the compassion that remains our best hope for healing.\u201d Change starts with the acknowledgement that the brokenness of our history is also in us, in the assumptions we make without realizing, in the thoughtless statements we didn\u2019t think would cause harm. I have been part of the callousness that killed George Floyd. Too often I don\u2019t even see the error of my ways. I need help to change.<\/div>\n

Today a prayer of lament<\/a> by Anglican Archbishop Ng Moon Hing of Malaysia let me borrow the words that I needed. I hope they\u2019re helpful for you too.<\/div>\n

Almighty God,
\n<\/i>we repent that
\n<\/i>in thought, word or deed,
\n<\/i>we have committed serious offenses
\n<\/i>against you and our neighbors.<\/i><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In laziness, despair and lust for power,
\nwe have provoked hatred, division and hurt
\n<\/i>within our communities.<\/i><\/div>\n
\n

In greed, deceit and indifference,
\nwe have caused serious damage,
\nunnecessary conflict and aggravated destruction.<\/i><\/p>\n

In selfishness, insensitivity and bias,
\n<\/i>we have encouraged and emboldened
\n<\/i>those who inflict hurt, pain and sorrow.<\/i><\/p>\n

In the name of religion, doctrine
\n<\/i>and even of Christ himself,
\n<\/i>we have wounded believers
\n<\/i>and pursuers of holiness and faith.<\/i><\/p>\n

In stubbornness, pride and arrogance,<\/i>
\nwe have caused division and strife<\/i>
\nwithin your church and among your children.<\/i><\/p>\n

Mercifully send Your Holy Spirit,<\/i>
\nthe Spirit of order and comfort,<\/i>
\nand cleanse us from all unrighteousness;<\/i><\/p>\n

restore in us true faith in Christ<\/i>
\nwhich brings truth, peace and harmony;<\/i><\/p>\n

and help us to walk together<\/i>
\nwith our brothers and sisters<\/i>
\nin the pe<\/i>ace\u00a0of our Lord Jesus Christ,<\/i>
