Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn\u2019s<em> Gulag Archipelago<\/em>.\u00a0A good memoir can change the world.\u00a0There\u2019s probably a story in your life that could change the world too \u2013 even if it\u2019s just for one person. How do you\u00a0unearth that story? How do you write a book others will want to read?<\/p>\n<p>Here is a basic outline:<br \/>\n<strong><em>Take the raw materials of your life, and<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 sift them<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 lift them<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 craft them<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Take the Raw Materials of your Life\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Panning for Gold\u2019\u00a0is an apt metaphor for\u00a0memoir writing. Just like the precious metal, the \u2018gold\u2019 in your story is hidden in the raw materials of your life. It\u2019s scattered in little flecks through life\u2019s dust and dirt\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0the events, conversations and emotions\u00a0of each day. It\u2019s found like veins running through the hard stone moments of loss and tears and broken dreams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are these raw materials?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The People in your life<\/li>\n<li>The Places\u00a0you\u2019ve been<\/li>\n<li>The Emotions\u00a0you\u2019ve experienced<\/li>\n<li>The Revelations you\u2019ve had along the way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where are they found?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Try looking in these \u2018pits and streams\u2019 for your gold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your senses<\/li>\n<li>Your memories<\/li>\n<li>Your records, journals, photo albums<\/li>\n<li>Your\u00a0family\u2019s tales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The gold will be found in the ground beneath your feet.<\/p>\n<p>Start with the raw materials of your life.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/800px-Gold_panning_at_Bonanza_Creek.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2490\" src=\"https:\/\/maiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/800px-Gold_panning_at_Bonanza_Creek-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"800px-Gold_panning_at_Bonanza_Creek\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a>2. Sift them<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the gold is found it\u2019s sifted from the raw materials. The sediment is washed away, the rock is thrown aside. Not everything in your story needs to be written. You have to sift the gold from the dirt. How? Ask two questions:<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWho are you (really) writing for?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many good reasons to write your memoir or autobiography:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>For meaning<\/li>\n<li>For healing<\/li>\n<li>For pleasure<\/li>\n<li>For posterity<\/li>\n<li>For publishing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Who is being written for in reasons 1, 2 and 3? You. What about reason 4? You, or\u00a0perhaps your family or\u00a0community. Only in reason 5 are you writing for others. This is important when considering the next question:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is most valuable to them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What will be most helpful for your reader to read? What will be gold (not dirt, or even copper) to them? If you\u2019re writing\u00a0for others, keep in mind that readers of memoir are looking for at least four things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Insight<\/li>\n<li>Inspiration<\/li>\n<li>Entertainment<\/li>\n<li>Hope<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Lift them<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The gold is discovered through sifting, then it is lifted out of the ground. If your story is going to bring riches to others, it will need to be lifted <em>out and up<\/em>, to transcend you and become a story about your reader. This is key if you\u2019re writing to publish. American writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2013\/09\/the-signifying-life-in-praise-of-the-outward-looking-memoir.html\">Beth Kephart puts it like this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Memoir at its very best\u2026 makes its interest in readers explicit, offering not just a series of life events, but a deliberate suggestion of what it is to be a human being\u2014to experience confusion, despair, hope, joy, and all that happens in between. True memoir is a singular life transformed into a signifying life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three transitions to make<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From small story to big theme<\/li>\n<li>From particulars to universals<\/li>\n<li>From events to discoveries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ultimately you\u2019re not sharing your story so\u00a0much as revealing your discoveries\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0even if that is one discovery revealed on the very last page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Craft them<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A nugget of gold is ugly in its raw form. Flecks of gold need to be melted together to become something useful. Gather your gold and employ all your skills to craft it into something beautiful for your readers. There are entire books on writing memoir; <a title=\"podcast\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/mtt039writingyourmemoir\/mtt039writingyourmemoir.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">in the podcast I\u00a0extrapolate<\/a> on just a few key areas:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Master the craft of storytelling<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Immerse yourself in good work<\/li>\n<li>Remember the character arc<\/li>\n<li>Details, Dialogue, Delayed Resolution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Tell the truth<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be brave, be vulnerable<\/li>\n<li>Avoid undue exaggeration, or\u00a0romanticising events<\/li>\n<li>But don\u2019t write out of anger or self-pity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Balance light and shade<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Map each chapter emotionally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Get critical feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Difficult to receive but necessary for success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">***<br \/>\n<em>We sleep and dream. We wake. We work. We remember and forget. We have fun and are depressed.
