Just over ten years ago, author Bal\u00e1zs Z\u00e1goni was awarded MAI\u2019s David Alexander Author Fund in 2014 to complete his young adult science fiction novel set in a future Eastern Europe,\u00a0Sphere<\/a>, and received training from award-winning author Stephen Lawhead. Sphere was picked up by Hungary\u2019s biggest publisher for children and youth, and launched in 2018 both in Hungary and Bal\u00e1zs hometown of Cluj in Romania. The book received several awards in Hungary and Romania. Bal\u00e1zs shares his journey in coming to Christ, and his subsequent experience in leading a Christian publishing house in Romania.<\/i><\/p>\n

Finding the Father to the Fatherless<\/strong><\/h3>\n

F<\/span>ive years after the fall of communism in Romania,\u00a0I was 19 years old\u2014<\/span>and I\u00a0had<\/span>\u00a0already lost my father.<\/p>\n

I had many long discussions with a friendly pastor, and I started to read the Bible. That was a big discovery, but difficult.\u00a0M<\/span>y biggest fear was\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0if I beca<\/span>me a Christian, I\u00a0would<\/span>\u00a0lose my clarity in thinking and especially in creating.\u00a0(Oh, what a fool I was\u2026)<\/p>\n

I also remember reading and being deeply touched\u00a0by Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s book,\u00a0Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot.\u00a0<\/i>I remember wanting<\/span>\u00a0to obey God, but I was afraid that<\/span>\u00a0God\u00a0would\u00a0<\/span>send me as a missionary somewhere, instead of making me a writer.\u00a0(<\/span>This fear seems so na\u00efve and funny now.)<\/span><\/p>\n

I struggled with God for more than a year before finally admitting: H<\/span>e is there,\u00a0H<\/span>e is alive,\u00a0<\/span>and through Jesus Christ\u00a0H<\/span>e\u00a0has<\/span>\u00a0opened the door for me\u00a0to live,\u00a0<\/span>too.\u00a0Psalm 68 touched me deeply, that God is<\/span>\u00a0\u201ca father to the fatherless.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

A season in leading a publishing team<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leading a Christian publishing house was in a way the most beautiful and\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0the same time\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0most difficult time of my life.<\/p>\n

I met and\u00a0made friends at MAI, and<\/span>\u00a0I read many good Christian books and manuscripts. This enriched<\/span>\u00a0my spiritual life. This is\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>thing I am missing a bit,<\/span>\u00a0now that I work in academia.<\/p>\n

The most difficult part was relying on God\u00a0for<\/span>\u00a0all\u00a0resources.\u00a0<\/span>We never\u00a0had<\/span>\u00a0enough money for the\u00a0next month\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>salaries\u2014s<\/span>ometimes not even the current month.<\/p>\n

We lost precious people because we couldn\u2019t pay them well.<\/span><\/p>\n

And though God miraculously provided all the time, which was an opportunity to rejoice and to be humbled, it was still very stressful and consuming.<\/p>\n

The lesson I learned is that the\u00a0publishing house belongs to God. He\u00a0<\/span>provides\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>wants\u00a0us<\/span>\u00a0to rely on\u00a0H<\/span>im every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The greatest opportunities in Christian publishing in Romania today are to stir up interest for the Bible, retelling\u00a0for new generations the old stories of faith, in new forms.<\/p>\n

Continuing to write stories of faith for future generations<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

My sixteenth book, The\u00a0Star and the Captain,<\/i>\u00a0came out last fall and it’s a young adult fiction\u00a0novel<\/span>\u00a0for the age group 12+. It is about the power of friendship and sacrifice, set\u00a0<\/span>in Budapest\u00a0during World War 2 and<\/span>\u00a0the Hungarian\u00a0H<\/span>olocaust. It is based on a lot of research and many real stories.\u00a0The book is aimed at readers who want to ask themselves:\u00a0<\/span>how would I have acted and reacted\u00a0during<\/span>\u00a0those testing times?<\/p>\n

My upcoming book is for the 9+ generation. It tells the story of how a child\u2019s prayer\u00a0can lead to the collapse of a totalitarian regime. While it is fiction, this book is partly based on the life of one of my former schoolmates.\u00a0It\u2019s the story of testing God with our prayers\u2013while God also tests us with His answers, which are often not what we expect, but in the end are satisfying in a way that surpasses all expectations.<\/p>\n

Praying for Christian writers<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

I would\u00a0deeply appreciate readers adopting<\/span>\u00a0the Serenity prayer for writers\u2014to pray\u00a0<\/span>this for me,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>all Ch<\/span>ristian writers,\u00a0\u201c<\/span>God, grant me the serenity to accept that there are things I cannot write, the courage to write the things I can and should, and the wisdom to know the difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
