Watching rain streak past evergreen trees, I think about my goals for 2015: courage, curiosity, and clarity.\u00a0 Clarity isn\u2019t too hard because I\u2019ve worked at it for a long time.\u00a0\u00a0 But courage is something else.\u00a0\u00a0 Although I may look brave because I travel and speak publicly, in fact I\u2019m not confident at all.<\/p>\n

When I wrote my first American-published book, God\u2019s Foreign Policy: Practical Ways to Help the World\u2019s Poor, <\/em>I hit a snag.\u00a0 The book had been commissioned informally. Then the commissioner lost interest. What should I do?\u00a0 Since four chapters were written, I decided to submit them to \u201cJohn X Jones Publishers.\u201d I expected that the manuscript would be rejected and I would have to circulate it through a dozen more publishers. Would I have the courage to push it through? Maybe not. But I could start.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the editor wanted to review the book further.\u00a0 This buoyed my hopes. Then he took a new job in Europe, my manuscript slid down into the anonymous pile, and my hopes were dashed.<\/p>\n

That June I attended a conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Although my publisher was located there, I wasn\u2019t bold enough to visit. So I headed home. On the way to the airport, however, my colleague asked if we could drop in at another<\/em> conference to contact someone.<\/p>\n

Waiting for her outside that<\/em> conference\u2019s banquet hall, I enjoyed identifying Christian leaders sitting around the tables.\u00a0\u00a0 Then the emcee arrived at the door.\u00a0 \u201cWe have two extra places,\u201d\u00a0 he said.\u00a0 \u201cYou must come in and join us.\u201d<\/p>\n

My friend sat down in the place near the door. I traipsed red-faced across the room to a central table where I discovered that my name card read \u201cMrs. John X Jones.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 My neighbor\u2019s card read \u201cJohn X Jones.\u201d (Mrs. Jones was absent because she had just had a baby.)<\/p>\n

Eventua\"\"lly I drummed up enough courage to tell Mr. Jones that my manuscript was at his company. \u00a0A few weeks later a contract came through the mail.\u00a0 An award-winning book resulted.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t always find a publisher, but God does honor our small steps of courage.\u00a0 My favorite verse is Joshua 1:9:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBe strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prayer:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 God, giv<\/em>e me the courage to take a new step for your glory.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
