ROYAL VISITORS AT THE CHURCH IN HINTON WALDRIST, ENGLAND<\/p>\n

CHRISTMAS ANNO DOMINI 1388<\/p>\n

My poem is inspired by Mary de Bohun (1368-1394) who was married to Henry Bolingbroke when she was only 12 years old. She lived for some time in Hinton Manor, then owned by the de Bohun family, and her eldest son Henry referred to in my poem, went on to become King Henry Vth. Mary was noted for her spiritual life and study. <\/em><\/p>\n

The oaken gate behind me swung,<\/p>\n

Its lichen-covered timbers gnarled<\/p>\n

I trod the icy gravel path<\/p>\n

Steering each faltering sliding step<\/p>\n

While moonlight sparkled on the snow<\/p>\n

Until I reached the church’s door<\/p>\n

My frozen hand stretched out to lift<\/p>\n

The rusty iron portal lock<\/p>\n

When soldier\u2019s mail-clad gloved fist<\/p>\n

Was raised in front of my visage<\/p>\n

“Why enterest thou into this place<\/p>\n

Of holy worship at this hour?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Know\u2019st thou not in Hinton church<\/p>\n

The highest lady in our land<\/p>\n

Has come to say her Christmas mass?”<\/p>\n

Yet when I told him whence I came<\/p>\n

His guard was lowered; he bade me pass<\/p>\n

To enter through the low-hung porch<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I step into the gloomy nave,<\/p>\n

By candles and three reed lamps lit.<\/p>\n

Kneeling behind the nearest pew<\/p>\n

I slowly lift my gaze to see<\/p>\n

In front a truly dazzling sight<\/p>\n

A gorgeous gown of royal blue<\/p>\n

Worn by our Mary de Bohun<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And clasped to Mary\u2019s loving breast<\/p>\n

The infant Henry, royal heir,<\/p>\n

Not yet two winters since his birth.<\/p>\n

If only now they could but see<\/p>\n

The ways of pain which lay ahead<\/p>\n

For each in such diverse<\/p>\n

And truly anguished ways.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mary de Bohun was soon to die<\/p>\n

Before six winters more had passed<\/p>\n

Leaving her Bolingbroke bereft.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After the Holy Mass was said<\/p>\n

The Benediction sent us forth<\/p>\n

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum<\/em><\/p>\n

I wanted then to pay respect<\/p>\n

To Lady Bohun and her son<\/p>\n

To stoop down and obeisance make.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When Mary lifted up her head<\/p>\n

The tranquil beauty of that gaze<\/p>\n

Transfixed me in suspended time<\/p>\n

As all of thought froze like the frost.<\/p>\n

She gently gestured with her hand<\/p>\n

To show me that I might approach.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On bending low a fine-coiffed head<\/p>\n

She softly breathed into my ear<\/p>\n

“Seest thou that infant Christ<\/p>\n

Whose likeness we have come to lay<\/p>\n

In wooden crib for his nativity?<\/p>\n

Be sure to render worship true<\/p>\n

To Him who heav\u2019n and earth hath made.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Bow not to me nor to my infant son<\/p>\n

For in our Scriptures it is writ<\/p>\n

Worship the one true God and his dear Son.”<\/p>\n

Then as the fleeting moment passed<\/p>\n

It seemed as if this frozen season flew<\/p>\n

Out through the stained \u00a0glass window panes<\/p>\n

And spring\u2019s sweet breath swept through the nave.<\/p>\n

I saw then clearly in my dream<\/p>\n

The future of this Hinton church<\/p>\n

Lay not with earthly kings, nor lords<\/p>\n

Who enter through its timber door<\/p>\n

But with our humble village folk<\/p>\n

Who down the centuries \u00a0attend<\/p>\n

Week after \u00a0week to bow the knee<\/p>\n

Before the King of time and space.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This poem was inspired by Luke 4:8: <\/em>“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: \u2018Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'” It is so tempting to be impressed by celebrities and wealthy, famous people in our culture that we always need this reminder from our Lord. We can overlook that we are in the presence of the King of Kings.<\/em><\/p>\n

Our village, Hinton Waldrist, is very small, with less than 300 inhabitants. I was very surprised when moving there that it once had famous royal visitors in its church, the form of King Henry V.<\/em><\/p>\n
