You have lived through slavery yourself. You have seen what most people in Britain will never see.

And now you’re a free man. You carry a story that could change how people understand slavery and the world.

But you have a problem. Most people don’t want to hear your story. And even if they do, they may not believe it.

A small group of abolitionists is beginning to spread the idea that slavery is morally reprehensible. So you join them.

Then you write and publish The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano by Olaudah Equiano.

But the book isn’t an instant success. So you travel, you speak, and you keep placing your story in public conversation until it becomes harder to ignore.

As the movement grows, so does the market for your message.

Within a year, Equiano’s book gains traction. Future editions sell more copies. It becomes a bestseller and is reprinted nine times.

Books on the same issue that followed Equiano’s sold more quickly because they were building on prepared ground. The idea was no longer new.

Now imagine another person. Imagine that you are William Wilberforce. You are a member of the British Parliament. You’re driven by a Christian conviction that slavery is evil. You bring legislation to end it, and you fail multiple times.

It’s not because your argument is weak. It’s because the culture is not ready.

So you realize something. You cannot change the law until you help change what people believe.

So you begin working beyond Parliament. You advocate, give speeches, write articles, collaborate with others, and help fuel a growing movement.

Then you publish A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians. It’s not directly about slavery, but about the kind of faith that shapes how people live, think, and act. A faith that cannot ignore injustice.

Before people act differently, they need to see their faith differently.

Wilberforce, Equiano, and others did something remarkable. They didn’t just argue or publish books. Through all of these things, they built a movement. A movement that spread ideas, stirred consciousness, and reshaped the imagination of the public.

So that when change finally came, people were ready for it. In doing so, they revealed something many writers miss: before an idea can take root, it must first take hold of the imagination.

This leads directly to what we’ll explore today.

In today’s world, publishing untested or controversial ideas in a book can represent a significant risk, especially for those of you who lead small publishing houses. No one wants to spend time, money, and effort creating something no one reads, or filling storage space with books that are not selling.

But when you work in partnership with the Holy Spirit to prepare the soil of souls first, your ideas will flourish, bringing enrichment to the church and lasting change to society. Ideas like those brought forth by Equiano and Wilberforce were prophetic ideas—ideas that convict people to live according to biblical principles.

These are often the most difficult ideas to gain traction with the public.

We’ll look at how to introduce new ideas, test them, and refine them publicly so you can get your ideas to stick and begin building a market for your book before you write it.

Most writers assume the process works like this: You write the book alone. Then you publish it, promote it, and hope people buy it.

Sometimes that happens. But more often it works this way: You have an idea. The idea gets exposure. Then it gains traction, and people demand to know more. Then you write the book.

People don’t read simply what’s available. They read what already feels valuable. It’s better to think of your book not as the place where your idea begins, but where your idea matures. Books with mature ideas are better received.

Many of you are working with prophetic ideas, ideas rooted in truth that are ahead of their time and uncomfortable.

That creates a challenge because prophetic ideas are resisted. If an idea is truly prophetic, it will rarely be immediately popular.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write about it or present it publicly. So the question is: how do you publish the idea and prepare people to receive it?

In public relations, there are two ways ideas get presented:

One is called earned media. For our purposes, think of this as an earned platform. This is when other people share your idea on their platforms.

The other is owned media. Think of this as an owned platform. This is what you create and control.

Ideas begin to stick when they move between what you share and what others share.

Now let’s look at three ways to get your ideas to stick.

1 Start where attention already exists.

You do not need to build attention from nothing. You can enter places where people are already listening. You can borrow trust. These platforms might include:

Speaking at church or a Bible study

Being interviewed on a radio show or podcast

Sharing ideas in messaging or social groups

Writing articles for publications, newsletters, or websites

Earned media becomes especially important for prophetic ideas because people are more open to hearing difficult things when they come from trusted contexts:

Through a respected leader

Through a familiar setting

Through a trusted conversation

For writers, consider where you can share your idea clearly. For publishers, recognize where ideas are already gaining traction and find ways to use those platforms to promote your authors and their ideas.

2 Develop your ideas publicly on your own channels.

Share your ideas on spaces you create and control:

Your speaking

Your teaching

Your writing

Your blog or newsletter

Your social media

If you’re concerned about getting meaningless bot feedback online, start by sharing ideas on your personal pages with people who know you.

For writers, your job is to test and refine your message. Watch how people respond. Notice what questions they ask. For publishers, help your authors create or strengthen their own platforms and maximize how they share ideas.

3 Repeat your ideas until others carry them forward.

Ideas stick through repetition. Researchers estimate that it takes five to ten meaningful exposures to an idea before it feels familiar.

More importantly, ideas stick when others begin repeating them in their own words.

This is where earned and owned media work together. You might:

Share an interview on a podcast

Post about the same subject on social media

Teach on it at church

Write about it in your newsletter

This creates repeated exposure.

For writers, continue refining your message. For publishers, help multiply the reach of your authors’ ideas.

Now, have you ever shared an idea and later heard people repeating it in their own words? If so, you are beginning to create traction. Here are four signs of traction:

Resonance — people connect deeply with the idea

Repetition — the idea keeps getting shared

Requests — people ask you to share the idea

Reproduction — people repeat the idea themselves

For prophetic ideas, traction may also include:

Questions

Tension

Resistance

(Pushback is not always failure. It can be a sign that people are engaging with something new and uncomfortable.)

So how do you get from an idea to a book?

You write the book when:

Your idea is clear

Your language is tested

Your audience is engaged

Writers, your role is to carry the message. Publishers, your role is to notice what is being received.

At that point, you’re no longer guessing. You’re capturing what is already working.

As writers and publishers, you’re not just creating books. You are cultivating ideas. Ideas that spread are ideas grown in prepared soil.

If God has given you a prophetic idea, your responsibility is not only to declare it, but to cultivate the conditions where it can be received. So ask yourself:

What idea do you need to begin testing?

Where could you start testing it this week?

Where could you share it again the following week?

As you share your ideas, watch the feedback carefully. Refine the idea and share it again.

As you repeat this process, your ideas begin to stick, and you build a market for your book before you write it.

What happens when you have a very original idea but don’t want someone to steal it?

Most ideas are probably less original than we think. Often what makes them unique is your perspective. There is always some risk, but it is usually better to take the risk and share the idea than to hide it until the book is finished. Pray for wisdom and courage. And if you’re already working with a publisher, talk with them about your ideas early.

How do you build authentic relationships for earned and owned media?

Start with people you already know. Encourage friends and family to engage with your content. Respond personally to people who interact with your work. And most importantly, be yourself.

How do you deal with pushback?

Before joining Media Associates International, I ran a consulting group called Le Motif. I often encouraged mission agencies to invest more in storytelling, and sometimes people resisted those ideas. Criticism can affect us deeply. That’s why personal maturity and supportive relationships matter. Sometimes feedback is difficult but still valuable.

How do you navigate controversial ideas without starting conflict?

Find a trusted community that can both encourage you and challenge you. You need people who can help refine your ideas before you share them widely.

What if you don’t have much time?

Scale your efforts according to your capacity. Use opportunities already built into your life:

Bible studies

Church gatherings

Social media

Articles

Scheduled content

Writing articles can also become part of writing your future book.

How do you share your book idea naturally without sounding salesy?

If you’ve already been publicly discussing the idea, then the book becomes a natural extension of that conversation.
