Poems and Prayers for Peace: Still<\/em> anthology pre-launch<\/strong><\/h2>

This is an edited transcript of the online pre-launch of Still: Poems of Peace in Times of Turmoil <\/em>on World Peace Day 2026<\/a> with MAI-Africa Board Chair Rose Birenge, designer Neri Martins, and anthology editors Akolo Anthony James, Joan Campbell and Aaron Lee.<\/p>

Why we gathered on September 21<\/strong><\/h4>

Akolo: This is a gathering in purpose and faith\u2014a global fellowship to unite brothers and sisters in Christ across all time zones.<\/p>

It’s also a creative platform where we’re empowering Christian poets worldwide by giving that platform that enables us as poets to lend our voices to global issues and express the giftings God has given us.<\/p>

We can call this a peace advocacy: lending our collective voices in prayer to the things that are happening around the world. We know that the world is passing through some trying times.<\/p>

Why did we choose this day? We chose September 21 because it is a global observance of the International Day of Peace, and we are standing alongside different Christian communities praying for peace.<\/p>

Today, we are praying for the peace of the world.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u00a0The stars of the anthology: thank you<\/strong><\/h4>

Akolo: We want to thank the poets who have contributed. You are the stars of this anthology. You’ve submitted very beautiful works. We can see we have an artistic tapestry\u2014colorful expressions of faith and peace.<\/p>

It is quite a privilege for us as editors to see through these different voices. It’s been a learning experience, and we just want to let you know that we deeply appreciate you. We deeply admire you. We celebrate your talents and your contributions to this.<\/p>

I want to thank the MAI Poetry Group. We started brainstorming to see what topic should we talk about. A lot of people sent in suggestions. We ran a poll. We got all those suggestions, and then we ended up with Still: poems of peace and times of turmoil. Thank you very much for fostering this literary excellence.<\/p>

Joan: Thank you to all the poets who gave their creative best to the project\u2014often crafting a poem in a language that is not their mother tongue. That’s so commendable. We value and celebrate your creativity and courage and trust that your words will touch the hearts that God intends to touch.<\/p>

Aaron: I want to thank you on behalf of all the editors\u2014reading your poems and your reflections assured us that this was a powerful and impactful project for all of us to look at. It is our labor of love that we release in Jesus’ name. As the book goes forth into the world, you will bless and minister to many people and point people to the Prince of Peace, our Lord Jesus.<\/p>

Prayer for peace<\/strong><\/h4>

Akolo: Loving God, we gather from every corner of the earth, different tongues, different time zones, one spirit binding us together tonight. On this International Day of Peace, we come as writers and readers, as God’s people who believe that words can wound but also heal, that language can divide but also reconcile.<\/p>

Lord, you are the word made flesh, the Author of every true story, the Poet who spoke light into darkness.<\/p>

As we meet today in commemoration of this International Day of Peace, we ask that you would meet us here in this space in the poems that we’ve written, the stories that we long to tell, even silences we still need to break.<\/p>

Lord, we lift up this fractured world to you, the wars and conflicts raging even now, the quarrels within families, societies, and nations, the quiet violences done in unkind words.<\/p>

Make us tonight, Lord, instruments of your peace, not only people who write about peace but people who practice it in how we listen to one another across our differences.<\/p>

Would you bless this gathering tonight? Bless every voice that will be lifted, every heart that is turned to you, every page, Lord, that will be turned. May we, what we create tonight, be a small offering towards the peace that you promise, the peace that the world cannot give.<\/p>

We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our peace.<\/p>

Birth of the anthology: an opportunity to see the impact of Christian writing<\/strong><\/h4>

Joan: When Akolo and I started the MAI Online Poetry Group, our idea was to give everyone interested in poetry a chance to appreciate and enjoy the art form, to hone their craft and share their work and draw inspiration from both the renowned poets that we were reading, as well as from each other.<\/p>

We also gave the opportunity for our members’ poetry to be published online on the MAI Global website, and saw how encouraging this was for those whose work was featured.<\/p>

This got Akolo thinking: why don’t we extend our reach by publishing an anthology and invite submissions from Christians beyond just our core poetry group?<\/p>

We aimed to challenge and give opportunities to writers to share their work with the world and realize that their words could have an impact.<\/p>

Reaching emerging generations with the peace of Christ<\/strong><\/h4>

Joan: Another key component to our vision for this anthology is to present it in different formats.<\/p>

As he’s a little younger than I am, Akolo emphasized that today’s youth are highly engaged with audiovisual content. We want to adapt some of the poems into short, impactful audiovisual poetry devotionals to connect with younger audiences. Akolo has produced one or two of these audiovisual poems already, bringing together his love of words, his creative flair, and his musicality.<\/p>

The beauty of this format is that it allows us to deliver messages of hope and inspiration in a way that is accessible and shareable on social media.<\/p>

Christians speaking peace into our times and our world<\/strong><\/h4>

Joan: When we were thinking of themes, we looked around us at the world that was so rife with unrest and turmoil. Some of it is blatant and obvious\u2014wars, rumors of wars, natural disasters, and climate change. Some of it is more hidden, like gender-based violence and mental health crises, particularly amongst young people. But almost everyone is touched by the unrest and the lack of peace in society.<\/p>

As followers of the Prince of Peace, we realized that Christian poets have something valuable to say to this condition\u2014to bring hope and light in the darkness. This is how the theme was born.<\/p>

In his opening paragraph of the preface to Still<\/em>, our associate editor, the Nigerian theologian Professor Sanne Agung writes, \u201cThere are seasons in human history when words cease to be ordinary. They become cries from wounded hearts, lamps in darkened valleys, and fragile threads of hope stretched across the ruins of human suffering.\u201d<\/p>

Still: Poems of Peace in Times of Turmoil<\/em> is born out of such a season.<\/p>

It is more than a collection of poems bound together within the pages of a book. It is a testimony to humanity’s deep longing for peace in a world increasingly overwhelmed by violence, fear, division, hatred, grief, and uncertainty.<\/p>

Professor Agung has himself come face-to-face with such violence, fear, division, and hatred, as well as the power of love and grace to overcome this darkness. We hope to have him share his remarkable testimony at our launch event on October 21.<\/p>

Coming back to the professor’s beautifully written words, I really think they capture our vision and hope for this anthology\u2014which is to amplify the voices of Christian poets across the world as they put words to their wrestling with the dark valleys and the ruins of human suffering, both around them and at times within them. Some of the poems also reflect an honest wrestling with God on the questions of pain. Like Jacob in Genesis who wrestled with the angel of God, the end result to such laments is an increase in faith and often the blessing of a new perspective.<\/p>

Cover inspiration: held together by Christ<\/strong><\/h4>

Neri: As I was thinking about peace in war, beauty in chaos, I did some research, and I thought it would be best to represent it using a Kintsugi pattern\u2014a Japanese system of making clay pots where broken pieces are put together.<\/p>

It’s like the world is in a broken state, but still we’re held together by Christ, who is love and in Him is peace. He is the light of men, as the book of John in chapter one talks about, and that having life in Him is life.<\/p>

We\u2019re in a broken world and there\u2019s turmoil, but in the face of that, God promises to be there regardless.<\/p>

I thought the Kintsugi pattern would best represent that. I also gave a bright theme to represent the light in which we carry as Christians.<\/p>

Lasting peace we share: a prayer for peace<\/strong><\/h4>

Rose: We know that Jesus is our peace. He’s our shalom. Real peace is the one that God gives\u2014not so much the absence of conflict, but the presence of God’s favor and peace in our lives. Let\u2019s pray.<\/p>

My dear loving father, we thank you and bless you. You are Jehovah shalom, Jehovah our peace. Lord, we thank you for each and every person who’s in this call. You know the times we are going through, whether outward or inward. Lord, speak your peace into our situations.<\/p>

I’m reminded of the disciples rowing hard at their boat and being beaten all over the place by the storm. Then you woke up, and you spoke peace and said, \u201cPeace, be still.\u201d And the storm was stilled. Lord, whatever storms we’re facing, whether internally, in our own lives, or externally in our situations, in our environments, speak your peace. As we’re waiting for you to speak your peace, may you calm our hearts.<\/p>

Lord, I pray for the many places all over this world where there’s turmoil\u2014things that we cannot even imagine. There’s war, there’s earthquakes, there’s famine, there’s atrocities done by human beings that cannot even be mentioned.<\/p>

Lord, you know and you care.<\/p>

The disciples asked you, don’t you care that we perish?<\/p>

Lord, we know that you care. You care. I pray especially for many who know you and who are crying, who feel like you don’t care. May you remind them that you do care. You do care, and you are in charge of everything that happens. You are above the storm. You are above the mountains.<\/p>

Lord, I pray that we speak your peace to those people in DRC where there’s war, the people in Northern Nigeria where there’s persecution, to people in Somalia, in Ethiopia, in South Africa, in Ukraine, and in Russia.<\/p>

I pray for people in Palestine, in Syria, in the Middle East, and in Israel. I pray that they will meet the Prince of Peace. In everything that happens, whatever turmoil they’re going through, may it lead them to you.<\/p>

Lord God, I pray that you may give us your lasting peace and help us to be instruments of your peace, to go out into this dark world and share your peace and your love with those who are hurting.<\/p>

We thank you, Jehovah Shalom, for giving us this peace in our hearts. Help us not to be selfish with it, but to go share it, to go introduce many to you that they will experience your peace, your wellness, and your shalom. We thank you, and we bless you<\/p>

Lord, I pray this project shall be a blessing, even as it starts to move out into people’s hands and hearts. We thank you, and we give you glory in Jesus\u2019 name.<\/p>

For readers to come to Jesus the Prince of Peace: selected poets\u2019 prayers <\/strong><\/h4>

Aaron: As we went along the project, we asked, and we reached out to you and asked you to share with us your experience in writing your poems and your prayers for readers. We got an overwhelming abundance of responses! Thank you so much. We thought that we might share some of those with you today so that we can share the love and the joy and the prayer.<\/p>

\u201cWriting is a form of worship to God, for God, and being with God.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cMy prayer is that every person who reads the poems in this anthology will see God in every page, his character, his presence, and the peace he brings, even in the midst of disaster.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cMy prayer is for the lost to come to know Christ, for the reader to see God’s love and grace.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cMy prayer is that this anthology serves as a quiet sanctuary, and I hope and pray that the Lord will use these poems to remind readers that his peace is not the absence of turmoil, but his steady comforting presence right in the middle of it.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cMay the Lord use these poems to draw readers closer to him, to deepen their faith and remind them that no emotion or circumstance is too difficult to bring before a loving God. And ultimately, my prayer is that the words will point beyond the poet to the one who gives peace.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cMy prayer is that every word in these pages of the anthology will point beyond the writers to the one who brings beauty from brokenness, peace from chaos, and hope from despair. May the Lord use Still<\/em> for his glory and for the encouragement, healing, and renewal of all who read it.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cMy prayer for the reader is that the Lord Jesus himself, who is the light of the world, will enlighten our minds, strengthen our hearts, and use each of us powerfully for his glory.\u201d<\/p>

May these lovely comments and reflections encourage each one of us.<\/p>

A closing prayer for peace in Christ<\/strong><\/h4>

Aaron: Our gracious God, we thank you for this hour we spent together today, for the words that have been shared across oceans, from the biblical encouragement that has been shared across time and space, for the courage of every person and poet who wrote and shared a poem for this book, and even for the quiet moments when someone else’s story that we hear becomes somehow our own.<\/p>

Lord, you have reminded us again that literature is not escape from the world, but engagement with it, and that peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of understanding, a gift from you that we can use to build in the world.<\/p>

As we now return to our separate cities and our separate hours, would you just keep what was kindled here alive in us? Let the peace we spoke of tonight not only stay in verse, but move into our hands and our choices.<\/p>

Lord, we remember before you all those who still wait for peace in lands at war, in homes not at rest, in troubled hearts. Would you please be near to them today? And now, Lord, we seek your blessing as we part, and so may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.<\/p>

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May he make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May he lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace, shalom, wherever in the world you are and now go. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.<\/p>
