An editor:\"\"<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0believes a good book can be made better.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0raises the questions that provide objective guidance for the writer.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0is not afraid to say what he\/she thinks about a manuscript, honestly but with sensitivity.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0has vigilant concern for every word, every sentence, every punctuation mark in the writer\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0is a sounding board for the writer (according to the dictionary, a sound board reinforces tones by sympathetic vibration).<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0adjusts to a writer, not vice versa.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0takes time. Good writing takes time; so does good editing.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0has an ear for the author\u2019s style.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0is the most objective reader the book will have before it is published.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0knows that clear writing is essential for clear thinking.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0tries to second-guess the writer, but always in the writer\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0confirms the writer\u2019s uniqueness.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0gently cuts through the writer\u2019s hurt pride, subjective judgment, stubbornness, and just plain weariness.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0says, \u201cI put this in to show you what I think is wrong, not to insist that what I want is right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0never says \u201cI told you so.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Is Editing?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is the rigorous pursuit of perfection. It is an attempt to make writers draw on resources they never knew they could command.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is improving the improvable.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is finding the weak places and questioning them.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is fine tuning\u2014scrutinizing words, sentences, and paragraphs to see whether the language works.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing answers the questions the writer desperately wants answered:<\/p>\n

\u2013 What is it like to read my book?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0Does the writing work?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0Where are the loose ends?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0Can I write?<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is responding to what is present in a manuscript as well as what is absent.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is the subtle change that does not violate the author\u2019s style but results in discernible improvement.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing is discovering what the writer is trying to do and then helping him\/her to do it a little better.<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing means saying such things as:<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0I\u2019m not convinced here.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0I don\u2019t see how you got from there to here.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0The order here is confusing.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0This is where you lost me.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0I got bored here.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0You\u2019ve already said this.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0This character is one dimensional.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0This illustration\/anecdote does not work here\/does not make the point.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0This beginning\/ending is weak.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0What are you trying to say in this paragraph?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0Shouldn\u2019t you introduce this before that?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0Is this the right word in this context?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0What\u2019s the point here?<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u00a0Can you defend this statement?<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0Editing always takes two: an editor who believes that a good book can be made better, and a writer who is serious about his\/her craft.<\/p>\n
