Growing in Faith Through Books: Samuel Dorgbetor, Ghana

“Christian books are not a replacement for reading the Word of God. But reading them can help us grow in faith,” Samuel Dorgbetor of Ghana says. His published books include reflections on Job and the Psalms, as well as his latest book on Biblical Sex Education. This story is part of the Journeys in Christian Publishing: Stories from LittWorld series.

In what ways have books played a part in your coming to faith and spiritual growth?

Books in general have played a significant role in my faith and spiritual growth journey. Reading has helped me understand what faith truly is, and also strengthened my faith in God. Theology texts have also thought me how to apply faith to my everyday life and challenges.

Christian books have helped me gain insights about Christianity, faith and spirituality. They have deepened my knowledge of God, made me conform to Christ and be guarded against sin. It also helps me to read about others’ experiences with God, and apply lessons to my personal life.

Christian books are not a replacement for reading the Word of God. But reading them can help us grow in faith. I would like to advise readers to follow Christ and love everyone regardless of who or what they are, having the spirit of forgiving others, just as Christ loves and forgives us as we turn to Him in faith.

How did the Lord lead you into your publishing ministry?

I was led to my publishing ministry through the reading of the Holy Scripture and personal experiences with the Lord. The experiences of biblical characters such as Jeremiah, Job and David gave me the desire to share the knowledge I’d acquired with others, to also bring them to the Lord.

Please share some things the Lord has taught or shown you in your publishing journey so far.

The greatest opportunity we have in Christian publishing is that God Almighty would be elevated and revered as many people come to understand faith and gain maturity through the books and resources that we produce.

Being with the Lord has helped me to gain more knowledge and wider understanding of Him. He has also taught me how to deepen my love for His Word and humanity, and shown me how to have a wider connection with the Christian community and the world at large.

How might we pray for you and your ministry?

Pray for strength, for protection from the Lord, for provision, wisdom and understanding. Pray that the Holy Spirit would cause my readers to flee from and hate sin, but love righteousness and be conformed more to the image of Christ.
